Mary Fields was born into slavery in Tennessee. When Mary got her freedom she went west to Montana where she became a legend in her own time. She drove a freight wagon, a stage coach and operated a restaurant. Quite a career for any woman, but especially an African woman recently freed from chattel slavery.
